The Scenario: “Taking control of your destiny”

The business

Established for four years, Heritage Ceilings is a home based business distributing pressed metal ceiling and wall panels use to restore or feature in new heritage style buildings. The business is run by Jean Morrison and as an owner operator it relies on her to perform all tasks from stock control to marketing.

Jean is quite often caught sitting either in front of her computer, now the heart of her business or with paint and brush detailing one of her prized decorative pressed panels.

The Prelude

Jean had a web site remotely established by her Nephew who lived in Perth. Time had past and Jean need to change content within her site and felt this process of change would be a continuing saga, a long term demand she couldn’t place on her Nephew. Knowing little of this new technology but eager to learn Jean was primed for knowledge.

The advice

It was this eager state that I found Jean in when I visited her to answer her question. Questions like, “How do I change my web site?”, “How do I prepare my images?”, “What are meta tags and how can get a better profile for my web?”, to name a few. Knowing that answering these questions in detail would constitute a much longer term training exercise, I dealt with the main issues first, outlined what I could tend to during subsequent visit and discussed the issues I felt Jean could follow up with in her own time in others words mapped out a development strategy.

Hurdles

The main hurdle in this whole process and in most scenarios like this is the time and ability the client has to up skill themselves and then have the time to put what they have learnt into practice.

Results

To Jeans credit, she had followed through with all the instructions and advice we had discussed, taking on some formal Front Page training, registering a Domain Name and working on Keywords to optimise her site for search engines. The results speak for themselves, with the web site now generating more than 80% of Jeans revenue. While 60% of this revenue can be attributed to Jeans work on optimising her web site for search engines, opening up her overseas markets. Jean is excited about the difference that she can now make to her business by taking control of her online presences and continuing to maintain it to a high standard.
