Vintage Stomp 2006

A celebration of the 2006 vintage at Voyager Estate in the heart of the Margaret River Wine Region,  Sunday, 7 May.

It will be eye-opening, foot-reddening, and palate-pleasing. It’s the Margaret River Vintage Stomp, which will take place at Voyager Estate on Sunday, 7 May 2006. It will be a day of sensational food, wine, music, theatre, and games.

Every major wine-producing region in the world celebrates its grape harvest with community celebrations, rituals, feasts and ceremonies. Vintage Stomp was created in 2005 when it became apparent that Margaret River had no such communal celebration of its grape harvest, but wanted one.  It was such a success (3,000 people attending) that, under the artistic direction of Noble Rot Theatre Company, it is back again in the elegant gardens of Voyager Estate.

In recognition of the spirit of community celebration, which is the essence of Vintage Stomp, this year three spectacular events will be integrated: the newly named “Leeuwin Schools Spectacular”, kicking off celebrations on Sunday, 2 April; and the Margaret River Wine Industry Association will hold its Field Day in Cowaramup on Friday and Saturday, 5 & 6 May.

Sunday, 7 May, will see a Grand Parade at noon when Bacchus, the God of Wine, and his court of bacchantes lead a parade of revellers and decorated vineyard machinery to converge for a welcoming ceremony by the Wardan Aboriginal Dancers.

The Grand Parade kick starts a day of music, dance, circus and competitions culminating in the hilarious and highly competitive Celebrity Stomp, with top names stomping and spitting their hearts out for a worthy charity of their choice, under the cruel but fair control of ringmaster, Ian Parmenter. Alongside, there will be wine tasting from local wine producers, gourmet regional food produce, and traditional festival food. Arts and crafts lovers will be catered for by local artisans, and a fun-filled children’s area will keep youngsters entertained. All day long, circus clowns, living sculptures, wandering minstrels and actors will roam the grounds.

Though modelled on last year’s highly successful, award-winning inaugural Stomp, there is a new dimension this year: though the northern hemisphere will not have its harvest until October, South America, South Africa and New Zealand all harvest their grapes at the same time as Australia.  This year organisers decided to add a South American theme to the celebrations, including Samba and Salsa dancers, Tango and Capoeira.  In addition to the Celebrity Stomp, there will be the annual Waiters Race, Barrel Rolling and Scarecrow competitions, and three new competitions:  an Ode to Bacchus Challenge, a Fashion competition and a Grand Tug-of-War pitting Winery workers against Vineyard workers.

From the opening Schools Concert, through the Field Day, to the closing ceremony at Voyager Estate, Margaret River will give thanks for its harvest, celebrate its major industry and showcase the breadth and depth of its vibrant and talented community.
