Broadband

Please note that Connect South West ran a broadband project for the duration of 2005 which is now completed.

What is Broadband?

Broadband is the common term for a high speed internet connection – one that can transmit or download data many times faster than a standard telephone line.

One of the many benefits of broadband is that it it’s ‘always on’, like power and water, meaning that you don’t need to dial-up every time you want to connect to the internet, saving money and time.

Broadband services in the South West are delivered in different ways – via satellite, cable, wireless or ADSL.

Costs vary according to the technology used to deliver broadband. ADSL and cable plans start at $30/month plus a one-off modem purchase.

What is ADSL?

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is one form of broadband and allows data to be downloaded faster than it is uploaded. It uses special digital processing to squeeze massive amounts of data through existing copper phone lines.

ADSL broadband splits an existing phone line so that you can make and receive calls even when online – no more infuriating engaged tones for friends, family or clients.

However not everyone in the South West will be able to receive ADSL. Only those less than 4km from an enabled exchange and whose telephone line is not blocked will be able to connect to ADSL.

Will it Help My Business?

Many businesses in the South West have recognised the benefits of internet access but are still using traditional dial-up services which tie up the telephone line and are slow.

Broadband connected businesses report better productivity and efficiency.

Broadband opens up a whole world of e-commerce opportunities. Being always online, you can respond faster to email, ensuring you don’t lose that important customer request to a competitor.

Best of all, if you have a dedicated internet line you can save by cancelling this, as it is generally not required for Broadband internet.

Should I Get Broadband at Home?

Broadband ends the repetitive and expensive routine with dial-up internet of having to r re-dial every time the connection goes down. No more timing out when using internet banking.

Finding and downloading music, video and news clips is quicker and more fun. Once you have experienced the speed and convenience of broadband, you will not want to go back to dial-up.
